When you sign up with an email list rental company, you receive one-time access to their email list. The email list owner runs the emailing for you, so you do not have the actual lists. Email rental is a bit different than normal email lists buy email lists.

Most people who buy email lists have no idea how they got them, and the people who are building their email lists are specifically seeking to build a marketing campaign. When people come to you looking for marketing campaigns, they want something that will help them reach out to hundreds or thousands of people at once and get them to optin to their marketing campaigns. They don’t want just random email list rental.

If you go into an email marketing company and ask what kind of list they have created, most will tell you that they have multiple lists going at once. They have several thousand emails going out to people, and they have another thousand or so going out to people who opted in to their list. So they have lots of opportunities for people to opt in to your email marketing campaign, and you can create separate lists for different niches or even just different demographics, and target the emails accordingly.

So you have lots of opportunities for a lot of people to opt into your marketing campaign through these separate lists. But there are also some risks involved. For example, if you are marketing an ebook through a free internet website like Squidoo or Hubpages, then you can have people from those sites emailing your offers to each other. This means you have potentially dozens, or hundreds of thousands, of people who have already read your emails, and may very well click on your links to go to your sales page to buy the product.

The problem with this kind of email list rental is that you will never know how many people have read your emails. The only way to find out is to follow up with every single email recipient, or include a separate form somewhere on your site where you ask your visitors to simply give you their email address in order to receive more information from you. This would be a good measure, and one that I recommend to all my clients. But you still might not get the full benefit of your ads.

There are some marketers who take the opposite approach. Instead of looking at lists as a whole, they focus only on the emails themselves. In their eyes, if you give them the opportunity to sign up to your email list rental campaign, then they should get some benefit from it. They’ll argue that anyone who signs up for such a mailing list is a customer.

That’s a tempting argument, but it’s not really valid. After all, anyone can sign up for any number of email lists. So why insist that the person who signed up for your email marketing company’s email list rental get treated any better than any other customer? If a customer doesn’t like the product that you’re selling, he can always go somewhere else. Why insist that he put his name and email address to your marketing campaign if nobody else is doing it?

The bottom line is that email list rental marketing campaigns are a great way to create new customers and drive targeted traffic to your website. However, marketers must remember to keep their practices honest. A reputable email marketing company will provide honest guidelines for success, as well as honest advice when things don’t go as planned.
